"Tatum"

Tatum is a precious family member here at Boxberry. Tatum is a Bobtail - naturally short tail.

Tatum is our special little girl, her nick name is "Watta Dog" (as in What A Dog) anyone who knows us well would know why. She will not make it into the ring, and will never form part of our breeding program, but Watta is still a very important member of our family.

Tatum was born with a congenital defect called Mega Esophageus (M.E.) which means her Esophageus (the tube that takes the food from the mouth to the stomach) doesn't work normally. Tatum needs to be fed small amounts (about 200 grams at the moment) often (every 3-4 hours) in a raised bowl or standing up on her hind legs so the food slides down into her stomach. Normally there are muscles in the Esophageus to transport the food down to the stomach, in Tatum's case these muscles are absent and gravity takes the food down to her stomach.

We were very fortunate to find an email list for dealing with this condition in dogs which helped us to find the best way to cope with her problem. After many sleepless nights during the first 4 months of her life we finally found a food combination that agreed with our darling girl. We are constantly experimenting with her feed (type and amount) and although her M.E. causes her problems sometimes and it will never improve, we couldn't contemplate life without her.

Although many breeders and vets probably would not have gone to the extreme and the expense to keep a dog with this condition we felt that Tatum deserved the best life we could give her, and we will continue to love and care for our Watta dog for as long as God is on our side.

Watta's photo will be updated as she grows - which is a very slow process :-). The main photo above was taken at 2.5 Years of age (giving her mummy some lovin), 12 months sporting her new jacket & 4 months :-).
